The Road to Damascus: How Do You Do It?

Let’s face it. Anybody who has tasted of the goodness of Christ Jesus and rendered obedience to the Gospel now enter into a whole new world. They had been going in one direction for so long, and for whatever reason never gave it all to Jesus— and one day it hit them.

Well what happened?

Picture Saul on the way to Damascus. His intent was to go about his day and his life as normal. Normal for him was going out to uphold the word of God by arresting, beating and even killing those who believe and teach Jesus as messiah and the way to heaven. The Way is what it was referred to at times in the biblical account.

Saul was going his own way. But he didn’t know that. For all intents and purposes he thought he was serving and defending God.

But on the way to Damascus… he met Jesus. Jesus, who had long ascended into heaven by now, was there and asking Him a question.

Why are you persecuting me?

He met Jesus. He met the God he claimed to be defending and was then pointed in the right direction. He was convinced and convicted. He was made blind to further prove the divine nature of this meeting. Later he was told what he must do. That action was to arise and be baptized, washing away his sins and calling on the name of the Lord.

Saul never made it to Damascus to continue doing what he was doing. Saul became Paul. Everything changed because of the truth. Paul proceeded to teach Jesus.

Why?

Because he wanted to serve and defend God. This he did very passionately and without fear of any threats or danger perhaps because he realized the lost state that he, and everyone he had ever led away from Jesus, was.

What is my point? My point is that Paul understood that the one who was to free the world from their sins and death and the pain and bondage of both was Jesus. He understood that and stopped what we was doing. He turned around and walked the other way. Repentance. Then he proceeded to tell others why they ought to do the same.

He entered a whole new world.

In this whole new world therein lies a peace that can only come from confidence in the promises that came through Jesus. There also comes a joy that comes from knowing that peace and being able to truly speak to God anytime. There comes a genuine direction on how to live life correctly and cleanly, in a truly fullfilling manner. Then there comes a fear and concern for anyone who has not received any of that.

So how do you tell them?

Faith and belief go hand in hand and faith leads us to repentance and obedience. God tells us that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Notice that I didn’t place any scriptures in this blog. But listen. Perhaps we don’t put our trust in the Word enough. I doubt that I’m going to take any power from God’s word by not putting books and chapter numbers. The word of God is sharper than any two-edged sword. Not the chapters and verse numbers. SPEAK GOD’S WORD. Speak it’s contents and it’s message. Faith comes by hearing that message, recognizing it’s from God and seeking to learn and obey it. Use God’s word to turn them around. There is a place for man’s organization system, but Word still has effect without them. Trust the Word and use it.

Saul knew about God. He wanted to serve God, but he served Him wrongly. His heart was desiring to know God even in error. Jesus speaks about this very thing when talking about the seed and the sower parable. Bare in mind that a heart seeking God will have ears to hear and thus the right heart. Speak to ALL. You never know what heart you are speaking to. Jesus is for everybody…willing to hear him.

This is by no means an exhaustive how-to evangelism list. But I do believe we have the necessary tools to teach the world, in a loving manner, the plan and promises in Christ Jesus. I do believe that there have been many people on the road to thier own Damascus and made it there…to kill, to hurt, to sin, to continue on with a life that is separated from God now. Thus they are in danger of being separated from God forever.

I believe that we change the world by leading each person to the very things I mentioned that only exist in Jesus. A person that lives for Jesus seeks to remove all that hinders that process. ALL.

So however you do it, make sure you use God’s words. For it has always been God’s words that has convinced and convicted. Use the spirit as well as the letter of the law. And do it in LOVE as Jesus did it in LOVE for us.

Let’s change the world, believers.
